Plan for a Slow Introduction
Even cats who beg to go outside can be cautious about a new space. Rushing the introduction can create lasting avoidance. Plan for 3 to 14 days of gradual exposure.
Day 1 to 3: Familiar Scents
Place a few unwashed cat blankets, a familiar bed, and a worn t-shirt of yours inside the catio. Leave the access door propped open but don't force entry.
Day 3 to 7: Supervised Visits
Carry your cat into the catio and sit with them. Bring high-value treats. Let them leave whenever they want. Keep first visits to 5 to 15 minutes.
Day 7 to 14: Free Access
Once your cat enters willingly, open the cat door and let them come and go. Continue to supervise the first few hours of free access.
Cat-by-Cat Tips
Shy Cats
Hide treats throughout the catio so they discover rewards organically.
Bold Cats
Bold cats may rush in, climb everywhere, and try to escape. Block any potential escape routes during the introduction phase.
Senior Cats
Add low ramps, soft bedding, and a covered hideaway. Avoid extreme temperatures.
Most Cats Come to Love It
By week two, most cats are asking to go out daily. If yours doesn't, keep trying โ patience nearly always wins.
